Beginners Guide to Photoshop: Quick Photo Edits, Straighten Image

Using the straighen option of the crop tool, Quickly we shall repair images by straightening the horizon and filling the gaps resulting from rotating the image

In This Tutorial, Quickly we shall repair images by straightening the horizon and filling the gaps resulting from rotating the image:

  • Use Straighten Tool associated with crop tool
  • Auto content aware fill the resulting gaps after straightening
  • Difference from straighten associated with the ruler tool

Step 1, Use Straighten Tool associated with crop tool

  • From the side tool bar select the crop tool as in the image to the right
  • If you can’t find it, go to the search icon on the top right corner. Type Crop Tool. It will be highlighted in blue for you
  • The top tool bar will be converted for Crop Tool as the right image
    1. Un-tick the Delete Cropped Pixels
    2. Tick the Content Aware (fill). It compensates the transparent pixels in the canvas when the image is tilted to straighten the horizon.
      NOTE:IF the Content Aware Option is dimmed. Select the Layer and menu>Layer>Rasterize>Layer
    3. Click the Straighten tool to start the straighten process in the next step

Step 2, Auto content aware fill the resulting gaps after straightening

  • After selection the Straighten tool as in step 1.3 above
    1. Draw a line along the horizon line that you want to straighten
    2. You will see the inclination angle of the drawn line
    3. Once you Release the mouse click or the touch pad, the image will be titled to make the angle of this line 0.0 degree
    4. The mid access of the image (4) is kept as the original width
    5. The areas marked (5) will be cropped. It is minimum when Content Aware is selected
    6. As the Content Aware Fill is selected, the straightening action leaves transparent pixels to filled as you press Enter (Return)
    7. As you click Enter (Return) the Filling algorithm starts and you get an image with straightened horizon and of same dimensions as the original one as the below images

Difference from straighten associated with the ruler tool

  • When selecting the measuring ruler and drawing a line across the image, you get an option in the tool bar to straighten the layer along this measurement axes. i.e. to tilt the image so this line is horizontal. You can see result in Image 1 below
  • The transparent pixels remains as there is no option for Content Aware filling. You Can then Make a rectangular selection and crop the image to it
  • When using the Crop Tool straighten option while Content Aware Filling is deselected, You can see in Image 2 below, as the function of the tool is to crop; it selects from the straightened Image an area smaller than the original image and crop the image to it to avoid cur the transparent pixels
