Photoshop Tricks: Polygons & Selections

How to set the options for Polygon initial settings• How to position it on the working space?• Center shapes within each other. A Star or A Flower to Draw.

Geometric shapes were and will always remain a basic element in your design. We shall explore Polygons & Selections:

  • Different options for Polygon initial settings
  • How to position a polygon on the working space?
  • Center shapes within each other.
  • Place the polygon in a specific location.
  • Make a wooden Hollow Polygon with Depth in the next Post.

Different options for Polygon Initial settings

  • You can reach the Polygon shapes from the side panel together with the rectangle and oval shapes or from the
  • Once Selected, You can the polygon tool settings top menu above the workplace.
  • The settings include:
    • No of sides
    • To make a star shape or not
    • Indent Sides, In case of a star, the % length of the star hand relative to the total radius
    • Smooth Corners
    • Smooth Indents
  • WE are going to see each of them in Action below:
A 5 Side Polygon with only outline

Indent side by: 50% means that line 2 is 50% of line 1

How to position a polygon on the working space?

You have 3 ways through which you can position a Polygon on the workspace in Photoshop

  • Method One 1
  • Click one time on the screen. This will mark the Top Left corner of the imaginary box surrounding your Polygon.
  • The Polygon settings menu will open to enter the dimensions of the polygon beside the 5 options described above
  • Your Polygon will be drawn to the left down from this point
  • Method Two 2
  • Hold the right mouth click.
  • This will mark the center point of your Polygon.
  • Drag the mouth to any direction the polygon will grow and rotate freely with you till you release the mouth click
  • The settings of the polygon are those set in the polygon top tools menu after you select polygon from the side panel
  • Method Three 3
  • After you placed the polygon using any of Methodes 1 or 2
  • Use the selection tool to in the top of the side tools panel to Move, size or rotate it

Center shapes within each other.

  1. IF you want to center your Polygon or to change its location you can use the align toolbox in the top menu

  • It allows you to align the polygon to the right, left, top, bottom or center vertically or horizontally relative to the canvas or relative to a selection
  • The choice of aligning relative to canvas or selection is made from the align tool in the top tool settings bar

  • Now Polygons and selections alignment can be done in either of 2 ways
  1. From the right layers panels select the 2 polygons or 2 shapes you want to center relative to each other
    1. Make sure you select the selection tool from the left side panel
    2. From the align tool (Image 4-1)in the top tools menu make sure that “Selection” option is selected (Image 4-2)
    3. Use the align tool options to center the 2 shapes
  1. Select an area using any of the selection tools (Refer to our videos on selection Part I & Part II) or our post Easily make a magic selection
    1. Make sure you select the selection tool selection-tool from the left side panel
    2. Make sure from the right layers panels to select the polygon shape you want to center relative to the area selected
    3. From the align tool (Image 4-1)in the top tools menu make sure that “Selection” option is selected (Image 4-2)
    4. Use the align tool options to center the shape and selected area

Place the polygon in a specific location.

  • From menu > Edit > Free Transform or simply ctrl+T
  • The Free Transform Tools settings will appear on the top toolbar above the workspace

  • The X & Y coordinates in the image above represent the coordinates of the center point of your polygon.
  • Change these values to be exactly where you want
  • To know the center point of any Polygon, select it and press ctrl+T

Make a wooden Hollow Polygon with Depth.
