Steps to create a wooden hollow star with depth:
- Draw an 8 side polygon with:
- star shape
- 20% indentation for sides
- Use the settings on the side
- No outline
- Blue fill
- 500 px X 500px (50% of your canvas)
- No curved Corners
- No curved indents
- Duplicate this 8 corners star to a smaller one
- From the layers side panel, select the polygon layer and right-click on it or select duplicate from menu>layer>Duplicate
- press ctrl+T to open the Free transform Top tool menu
- Set W=50%, H=50%
- Set the Fill to black
- Now, make blue star hollow
- Use the object selection tool
from the side panel - Drag it around the black star
- Select the blue star layer from the right-side panel
- Then, menu>Layer>Rasterize>Layer to make it directly editable
- hit delete
- Hide the black star by clicking on
eye icon (visibility) beside the black layer - You will end up with a hollow polygon as in the image to the side
- To add a Wooden Texture You have 2 options
- Use the wooden Styles from the Photoshop as fill to the star
- Embed a wooden layer or any other image and cut the hollow star in it
- Add a wooden texture from Photoshop Stylesmenu>Windows>Styles
- The Style selection panel will appear
- Go to Natural .Wood
- Then apply menu>layers>Layer Style> Bevel Emboss
- settings as Screenshot to the side
- Embed an image and cut the star into it
- menu>File>Place Embedded
- Choose the image you prefer, I will be using in this demo an Image by Diego Passadori from Unsplash Website
- Make the blue perforated star layer to the top and use the
object selection tool - IF the selection is not perfect, you can repeat it or correct is using are + or -

- continue
- Select the Wooden Layer that you embedded
- menu>Layer>Rasterize>Layer
- menu>Select>Inverse
- hit Del (Delete)
- Apply Bevel and Emboss
