  1. To Style the contour lines of the puzzle pieces, you need to go to Bevel & Emboss Layer Style from menu>Layer>Layer Style>Bevel & Emboss
  2. There is already a texture effect of inner Bevel applied together with the puzzle texture and its default settings will be displayed
  3. You have many options for combinations of these effects in this Bevel & Emboss
  4. The default settings are here to the side and in the coming sections we shall highlight the most important of them
We shall start changing some of the basic settings to see its effects
First, Change the Direction of the shadow

As explained above, the Puzzle Texture applies a Bevel & Emboss style to create the puzzle lines. One direction which is the Shading > Angle brings the light source and opposite to it is the shadow

As in Image 1 below, the light is coming from 90 degrees (Shading > Angle) making the lighted part of the embossed line to the top of the line and the shadow to the bottom. When we change it to -90degree it will be reversed as in Image 2 below to the right

Image 2, -90-degree Angle shading
Second, Change the color of the shadow and the light source

We shall change the light source color to Yellow and Shadow color to green, keeping shading angle at -90 degrees

Third to change the type of the puzzle contour line we can change the (A) Altitude, (b) Depth
(A) Shading > ALtitude
  • Shading Altitude represents the angle of elevation of the light source above the ground NOT ITS DIRECTION
  • Altitude Zero gives faint to null shadow
  • Altitude increases the shadow up to 50 degrees then it drops again till light source is 90 degree and it turns to be like 2 lines as the light source is perpendicular to the embossed line
altitude-90-degree
(B) Shading > Depth
  • It is the depth of the embossed puzzle line
  • It has a minimum value of 1 not zero which gives faint to null outline
  • It increases up to a certain level that's all not indefinitely
