Beginners Guide to Photoshop: Create 24h Time lapse in few steps from a static image.

In this tutorial we shall quickly create a 24h Time Lapse from a static image. We shall use Lens Flare Filter. You can return to this tutorial to know more about it: Beginners Guide to Photoshop: Add sunrise to your image. This Tutorial will show you how to:

  • Scale an Image (optional)
  • Add Sun Light and its reflection on camera lens
  • Create Video Time Line
  • Change Sun intensity on the time line
  • Move the sun across the screen
  • Add night to the time line
  • Create GIF

Step 1, Resize Your Image (optional)

  • It depends on you project or final output you are after
  • If you are heading o make a GIF so reduce the image as much as you can. You can do the same at the end while exporting and saving the GIF but you have all the layers at full size.
  • This can be helpful for returning to the project and editing it again.
  • Otherwise, check the dimension of your final project and change image size from the beginning to the intended output
  • To change Image size, after loading or opening the image : menu>Image>Image Size. Hit ctrl+0 to return to normal view.

Step 2, Add Sun Light and its reflection on camera lens

  • Create a new layer menu>Layer>New>Layer or ctrl+shift+n
  • Fill it with black color , using the Paint bucket tool Paint Bucket tool and select foreground color to black Foreground color
  • Then menu>Filter>Render>Lens Flare
    1. Select 35mm Prime Lens
    2. Use the + sign to move the Flare to the center
    3. Move Intensity to around 160
    4. Watch the Lens Reflection created for you
    5. Click OK
    6. Then from the layers side panel or menu>Windows>Layers
    7. Open the blend drop down menu
    8. Select Screen blend mode
    9. Then Transform this layer into Smart Object , menu>layer>Smart Objects> Convert to Smart Object

Step 3, Create Video Time Line

  • Tot create a video Time line, menu>Windows>Time Line
  • Select Create Video Timeline
  • This will generate a 5 sec timeline
  • Each second is 30 Frames
  • NOTE: When Adding Key Frames with Opacity or Transformation change, Adobe automatically create the frames in between in gradual succession to match the start and end Key Frames. Thanks Photoshop.

Step 4, Change Sun intensity on the time line

  1. Expand the Black Layer 1 Time line options
  2. Drag the Current time or current Frame Indicator
  3. Till the 02:00f which is the 2nd second of the video time line
  4. Click the small stop watch beside Opacity to create the first Key Frame at 100% Opacity
  5. This small diamond indicate the first created KeyFrame
  6. Drag the current Time pointer to 03:00f
  7. Click on this Diamond to add another key frame
  8. This key frame together with point(5) Key frame will hold the Sun Light maximum intensity for 1 sec between 02:00f and 03:00f
  9. Drag the Current Time Indicator to the end of the time line 05:00f
  10. From the Layers Side panel change the opacity of the layer to 0 %
  11. A new Key frame will be automatically generated once Photoshop detects opacity change
  12. Drag the Pointer back to the starting point at 0:00f
  13. Change the opacity at this point to 0%
  14. A new Key frame will be added here
    NOTE: When Adding Key Frames with Opacity or Transformation change, Adobe automatically create the frames in between in gradual succession to match the start and end Key Frames. Thanks Photoshop.
  15. You can test you work by clicking on the play button on top of the timeline
  16. It will take longer than 5 sec in the first time as it creates the frames between the key frames
  17. If thee video stops Go th the settings icon and select

Step 5, Move the sun across the screen

  1. First Thing we need to expand the sun carrying layer to 300% by clicking ctrl+T or menu>Edit>Free Transform. Then from Top menu change the width marked with w to 300%. Click Enter twice.
  2. Then Drag the Current time pointer to the middle
  3. Click the small stop watch beside Transform to record the first Key Frame
  4. A small diamond will be added to the time line
  5. Drag the pointer again to frame 0.0 at the very beginning
  6. Click ctrl+T or menu?Edit>Free Transform. Then change the horizontal center point from the top menu. It is marked with x. Change it to “-378”. Click Enter twice. This way you moved the center point of the layer outside the visible area.
  7. A new Key Frame is automatically added to the time line
  8. Drag the pointer to the end of the time line at 05:00f
  9. lick ctrl+T again and this time set x to 1136 = the original Center point (378) + the image width (758). Click Enter twice.
  10. A new key frame is added
  11. You can hit play to test the movement of the sun

Step 6, Add night to the time line

  • Drag the time line pointer to the starting point
  • Create a new Layer either ctrl+shift+n or menu>Layer>New>layer
  • Fill it with the black paint as in step 2 above
  • On the time line make it visible for the first 15 frames and last 15 frames as steps
    1. Expand the new layer video time line options
    2. Drag the pointer to point o.o on the time line
    3. Same as in t step 4 – 10 above, change opacity to 80%
    4. Click the small Stop Watch beside the Opacity time line
    5. A new key frame is added
    6. Drag the pointer to frame point market 15f from start
    7. Change opacity to 0 % as in step 4 -10
    8. A new Key frame will be automatically added
    9. Drag the pointer to 15f before the end
    10. Click the diamond to record a 0% opacity point
    11. A new key frame appears on the time line
    12. Drag the pointer to the last frame 05:00F
    13. Change opacity to 90 % a sin step 4-10 above
    14. A new key frame will be automatically added
    15. Click Play and enjoy you great work

Step 7, create GIF or video as you want

  • To create GIF, menu>file>export>Save For Web (Legacy)
  • To Create video, menu>File>Generate>Render Video
